5. Gordon Hutchens - Gordon Hutchens Pottery
Studio location : 4031 Wren Road, Denman Island
Gordon Hutchens, an accomplished artist, established his studio on Denman Island five decades ago, following his graduation with honours from the University of Illinois, where he majored in ceramics and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. A true master of his craft, Hutchens mixes his own clay bodies, creates his own glazes, diving deeply into the underlying chemistry, and designed and built, at his studio, four gas and one wood fired kilns. His work has been exhibited in over 25 one-man shows and over 100 group shows across Canada, the US, Japan, and Korea. Hutchens has also taught workshops on pottery from Newfoundland to Victoria to New Jersey and for the past 20 years at North Island College in Courtenay, BC.
Visitors to Gordon's studio will discover an extensive collection of pottery showcasing various firing techniques and a broad spectrum of colours, ranging from functional to museum-quality pieces.
