Gordon’s pottery spans a vast range of firing techniques, styles, and colors — from everyday functional ware to museum-quality ceramic art.

Gordon Hutchens built his studio on Denman Island nearly 50 years ago after earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with honours, at the University of Illinois, majoring in ceramics. He mixes his own clay bodies, creates his own glazes, diving deeply into the underlying chemistry, and designed and built, at his studio, four gas and one wood fired kilns. He has had over 25 one man shows and over 100 group shows across Canada and in the US, Japan and Korea. He has taught workshops from Newfoundland to Victoria to New Jersey, and for the last 20 years at North Island College, Courtenay, BC.
